Best Methods for Cleaning Bath Fixtures

Gleaming bath and sink fixtures make the bathroom attractive and inviting. You can only enjoy shiny faucets free of water spots and soap scum when you properly maintain and clean them. In order to have shiny fixtures in the bathroom, follow these cleaning bath fixture tips.

Avoid Damage by Using Gentle Products

Chrome is a soft metal that scratches easily. Make sure your bath fixtures stay sparkly by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive, rough or sharp cleaning tools. When cleaning bath fixtures, avoid using anything but soft sponges or cleaning cloths.

Along the same lines, avoid using harsh chemical cleaning products on chrome, including scouring powder. If you use a commercial cleaner, it should say that it’s safe to use on chrome and other bath fixture metals. If it doesn’t, don’t use it.

But fear not! There are several safe and easy options for cleaning bathroom fixtures that you can easily prepare from ingredients in your kitchen.

Dish Soap and Water

Simply add a squirt of a mild soap to a bowl of warm water. Use a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge and clean the fixtures well, rinsing with warm water. Use an old, soft toothbrush to clean any crevices that are hard to get to with the cloth or sponge. Rinse the fixtures well with warm water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Vinegar and Water

Vinegar is stronger than soap and water and a good choice when there are more stubborn stains and soap scum on the fixtures. Vinegar is acidic, so the acids help remove stains and scum. Mix the vinegar at a one-to-one ratio— one part vinegar to one part water. If you’re going to be cleaning the fixtures in a standard-sized bathroom, one cup vinegar and one cup water should make a sufficient amount.

Apply the solution to the fixtures with a nonabrasive sponge or soft cloth. Use a soft toothbrush for out-of-the way areas. If the fixtures are especially stained, drape a vinegar-water soaked cleaning cloth over the stained areas and let it sit for 15 minutes prior to gently scrubbing. Rinse well with warm water and dry the fixtures with a soft cloth.

Maintain Bath Fixtures

Cleaning bath fixtures on a regular basis and keeping them dry goes a long way toward ensuring that they stay shiny and make your whole bathroom gleam. Wash the bath fixtures weekly and keep a soft cloth nearby to wipe them down after every use.
