As Duke University basketball coach Michael William Krzyzewski once said, “People want to be on a team. They want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They want to be in a situation where they feel that they are doing something for the greater good.”
At this year’s It’s the Journey Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, several Pink Plumber employees had the privilege of discovering how true Krzyzewski’s words are. They volunteered for the popular event that raises funds for breast cancer screening, diagnostics, treatment, research, support services and genetic counseling and testing in Georgia.
“Five of our plumbers at The Pink Plumber took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer at this year’s It’s the Journey,” says Frank Lancaster, one of The Pink Plumber employees to donate his time to the cause. “We set up a display table and offered pink carry bags, beaded necklaces and even rubber ducks.”
As Pink Plumber volunteers discovered at the event, the experience is an invigorating and inspiring one, notes Lancaster, who has volunteered for three years. “There is a definite feeling of excitement when you volunteer. In some ways, the experience is a little overwhelming, due to the fact that the event is not only an event—it’s a movement—but it’s a good feeling.”
Lancaster, like all of The Pink Plumber employees, volunteers at It’s the Journey with the aim of doing his part to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. “The reason I volunteer is simple,” he says. “I wholeheartedly enjoy what I do as a career and therefore I feel it’s imperative to fight this disease whenever and however possible.”
Started in 2002, the It’s the Journey Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer is an annual fundraiser that attracts participants from far and wide. The money raised goes toward funding breast cancer research and treatment.
This year, the Pink Plumber acted as a B’Rest Stop Sponsor. These stops are designed to give fatigued walkers a chance to rest and refuel.
“Volunteering at such an important event to fight breast cancer was truly uplifting and encouraging,” says Lancaster. “At the event, I was amazed and inspired to see so many different participants from all walks of life standing tall in one accord and putting the disease on notice that it will be eradicated!”
